Description: This letter to Frederick Billings from George Perkins Marsh acknowledges the receipt of an appointment by the governor of the legislature directing Marsh to discuss terms with sculptor Hiram Powers to create statues for the Vermont Capitol. In 1846, Frederick served temporarily as secretary of the State Legislative Council and signed the document for then-governor Horace Eaton. The University of Vermont Libraries has the appointment letter from Billings to George Perkins Marsh appointing Marsh to discuss terms with Powers to create statues of Ethan Allen and Thomas Chittenden for the capitol.
